POETRY OF THE EARTH
ORVIETO
The hometown of ANTONIELLA founder, Orvieto holds special meaning, both personal, and historical. Built on ancient Etruscan caves hewn in porous rocks, Orvieto is a medieval city abundant in art, surrounded by vineyards, and full of life. Famous for their truffles, wines, the wild natural surroundings, as well as incredible architecture - namely the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, the crown jewel of the city.
The main scene is a view from a local winery, overlooking the hilltop city, with the Duomo prominently visible. The patterns surrounding the main vignette are inspired by patterns painted on the walls in various smaller churches in the city.
The four smaller vignettes, clockwise from the top are 1) San Giovenale church, one of the oldest churches in the city. 2) Piazza Republica. 3) Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta. 4) Piazza Cahen. These pieces are naturally colored, with soft pinks, greens, blues and golds, and trimmed with either blue, red, or natural edges.
ROMA
The heart of Italy, and at one point, the civilized world, Rome was an obvious choice to honor in our artistic exploration of Italy. Featuring various monuments and scenes from the city, including the Vatican, Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and others.
The leafed patterns around the edges of the design are derived from the ancient fresco, The Garden of Livia, which is on display in Rome.
Colored in red, blue, and violet, the three color ways exemplify the majesty, richness, and power of Rome.
ASSISI
Assisi, the birthplace of ANTONIELLA. From within the Basilica of San Francesco, the dream began. Hours were spent studying the patterns within the church, and in the city, learning its atmosphere and personality. This design is the least image-based of the three, and relies mostly on intricate patterns, colors and shapes.
The three color ways that were used encapsulate the raw, natural beauty of the area. Assisi is a place where the lines between city and nature are erased. Forested mountains embrace the white-stoned city from one side, and vast plains and landscape expand like sky in the other.
FIRENZE
Full of rich history, Florence Italy is one of the most deservedly iconic and incredible cities in Europe. This pocket square takes the wearer on a journey through some of the most-loved spots in the city - surrounding the main vignette which overlooks the duomo, the four quadrants feature scenes of Ponte Vecchio, Santa Croce, Palazzo Uffizi, and the Piazza Delle Signoria. The geometric motifs and patterns in the corners and the surrounding borders have been pulled directly from motifs found within and on the Duomo itself. On the outermost border, a landscape of Tuscany inspired by the famed fresco 'Procession of the Magi", found within the Palazzo Medici in Florence is rendered.
BOLSENA
Perched on the edge of the largest volcanic lake in Europe, the ancient Etruscan town of Bolsena overlooks the crystal blue waters and mysterious is- lands found there. Featured in this design are iconic monuments of the small towns surrounding the lake, many of which were home to historic figures, im- portant events, both spiritual and historical. Capodimonte, the Castello dei Monaldeschi, the ruins of San Giovanni, Isola Bisentina, and other beautiful places are displayed in bright colors, surrounded by patterns inspired by artwork found throughout the area.Bolsena is a bright design that will pair easily with many menswear looks, while providing both drama, and flair.
DUE UCCELLI
Inspired by patterns found throughout Italy and subtle floral motifs, Due Uccelli designs are less image-oriented and more abstract in their structure. The two birds bring a whimsical story to the piece, a story that is open to interpretation. Imagine walking through a field of wheat, or sunflowers, or a deep forest filled with ferns, while nature plays around you. This design allows the viewer and wearer to add their own ideas to the meaning, rather than simply telling a story explicitly. The colors chosen for the Due Uccelli pocket squares and scarves are warm, bold, yet natural.
POETRY of the EARTH
Our goal in creating this design was to bring nature, art, and poetry together in a way that celebrates the earth like we have never done before. Historically, the term Ekphrasis was used to create a responsive piece of art to a piece of poetry, or vice versa. In creating this design in response to romantic poet John Keats, we created a new kind of ekphrasis, one that adds possibly a third layer to this dance. New outfits and ensembles will now be created with this design, and thus what began with poetry, became art, and now will become a creative tool for you in your wardrobe. We hope this piece inspires you to look at nature, art, and poetry in a new light, and we hope you enjoy wearing your piece of the journey.
ODE TO NAPOLI
Romantic poet John Keats, on his final voyage to Rome in search of a cure for his ailing health, spent two of his remaining weeks on earth quarantined on board a ship in the bay of Napoli. During that same year, Percy Bysshe Shelly, another poet wrote the poem, "Ode to Naples", a response to the proclamation of a Constitutional Government in Napoli.
Napoli, a city caught between the grips of life and death - perched on the edge of Vesuvius - a city with a tantalizing history of wars, kings, paupers, and poetry. The warring mystery that enshrouds and envelops this brightly-adorned metropolis never ceases to surprise those who step into it.
This pocket square imagines Shelley, writing his poem overlooking the Napoli bay, where rests John Keat's ship. It ties together imagery from il Maschio Angioino, Santa Caterina, the painting "The Bay of Naples" by William James Muller, the painting, "The View of Naples", by Caspar Andriaans van Wittel and other imagery inspired by local Napoli scenery and motifs.
